The Switch (2010): Movie Review

A Lazy Sunday Watch

If you’re tired of watching rom-coms with 20-something characters because you have just stopped relating to them, this movie will be a breath of fresh air for you! While diving into the unpleasant actualities of 30-something adults who are struggling to find a life partner, the movie has an affectionate note to it.

The Switch, although extremely predictable, grows on you by the time you reach the intermission and suddenly you are intrigued to know why little Sebastian is so obsessed with collecting photo frames.

The movie was released in 2010 and is based on an Allan Loeb screenplay. Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, The Switch can be a good watch on a lazy Sunday.

The Switch: Movie Summarized

Kassie Larson (Jennifer Anniston) and Wally Mars (Jason Bateman) are two best friends who have just hit 30. Both of them have good jobs and have been living in NYC for several years now. They meet often to discuss life, and during one of these meetings, Kassie drops the bomb on Wally that she wants to have a baby because her biological clock is ticking. With the idea of being a single mother, she tells him that she is looking for sperm donors.

Struggling to fight with his undeclared feelings for Kassie, Wally tries to talk her out of the idea. Cut to the next scene, he is attending her ‘Getting Pregnant’ party where she actually gets artificially inseminated. The donor’s there, Kassie is there, and Wally is there – blackout drunk!

Something happens in this party that changes the course of their lives, and that’s where things start escalating. The movie spans through 7-8 years, and gets you worried about what Wally was doing with his life!

There are some warm moments that will leave you feeling all fuzzy (the real reason why we all love watching rom-coms). Jason Bateman fits predictably well in his role, as he knocks it out of the park with his funny yet warm performance. Jennifer did justice to her character too.

There are spurs of fun and emotions sprinkled by the supporting cast – Jeff Goldblum (always fun to watch!), Thomas Robinson, and Patrick Wilson.

What I Learnt

    • You will be set right on the course of your life. Even if there are many detours, you will be on the right track, sooner or later.

    • Concealed emotions do more damage than expressed feelings.

    • Our lives are strangely tied to the people around us. Whatever happens to us impacts others in a way or another. No matter how aloof we act, no matter how much we deny it.
